Guns of Mass Destruction : AK47 and Barrett REC7

ak47AK 47

With over 75 million built worldwide, the AK-47 (a.k.a., “Kalashnikov”) is a firearms legend that has probably inflicted more lethal results than any other single weapon system ever produced.
Built on the same basic design as the German Sturmgewehr, it chambered an intermediate round and was built from stamped parts. The AK-47 was not only easy to produce and relatively cheap, is also proved remarkably easy to maintain and virtually immune to conditions that could easily take out other guns. Accuracy is average, but the Kalashnikov compensates for this with its ability to unleash a lethal wall of lead.

The AK-47 can be fired two mode i.e. single shot  and multi burst, its a gas operated 7.62×39mm assault rifle, first developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov. It is officially known as Avtomat Kalashnikova . It is also known as a Kalashnikov, an “AK”, or in Russian slang, Kalash.

The AK-47 is best described as a hybrid of previous rifle technology innovations: the trigger, double locking lugs and unlocking raceway of the M1 Garand/M1 carbine, the safety mechanism of the John Browning designed Remington Model 8 rifle, and the gas system and layout of the Sturmgewehr 44. Kalashnikov’s team had access to all of these weapons and had no need to “reinvent the wheel”, though he denied that his design was based on the German Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle. Kalashnikov himself observed: “A lot of [Soviet Army soldiers] ask me how one can become a constructor, and how new weaponry is designed. These are very difficult questions. Each designer seems to have his own paths, his own successes and failures. But one thing is clear: before attempting to create something new, it is vital to have a good appreciation of everything that already exists in this field.

The standard AK-47 or AKM fires the 7.62x39mm cartridge with a muzzle velocity is 715 m/s. Projectile weight is normally 8 g (123 grain). The AK-47 and AKM, with the 7.62×39mm cartridge, have a maximum effective range of around 400 metres (1,300 ft).

Barrett REC7
The M4-pattern carbine is inarguably today’s standard. For some, however, its 5.56×45 mm NATO chambering and direct gas-impingement system of operation are points of contention. Barrett Firearms Mfg., a company well-known for its fresh perspective on firearm designs, is offering an M4-style variant named the REC7 that strives to address these concerns.
The semi-automatic REC7, whose designation stands for “reliability-enhanced carbine,” not only chambers a larger cartridge than the M4 but also features a redesigned system of gas-piston operation. The carbine is chambered for the 6.8×43 mm SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge), a round that propels a 115-gr. projectile at roughly 2,500 f.p.s. from the muzzle. The overall length of the cartridge is nearly the same as that of a 5.56×45 mm NATO, so it is compatible with a standard-size lower receiver.
